Custom Eyewear Material Options

Material Options of Eyewear

After decades of development, the eyewear industry has continuously evolved, incorporating a wide range of materials to meet customer demands for fashion, comfort, and sustainability. This guide explores the commonly used materials for injection-molded, handmade, and metal eyewear, highlighting their benefits, drawbacks, and ideal applications.

Material options of Injection-molded glasses

Cellulose Propionate (CP)

Advantages: CP is lightweight, durable, and stable, with a glossy, transparent finish and good weather resistance.

Disadvantages: It has poor resistance to acids, alkalis, and organic solvents.

CP provides a look and feel similar to acetate but offers better stability, making it a solid choice for eyewear frames.

Nylon (Polyamide, PA)

Advantages:  It is tough, fatigue-resistant, and stable, with a high softening point. It is lightweight, wear-resistant, corrosion-resistant, non-toxic, odorless, easy to dye, and easy to mold.

Disadvantages: It absorbs moisture, has poor light resistance, requires strict injection molding conditions, and is not resistant to strong acids.

Grilamid TR90(TR-90)

Advantages: The material is lightweight with a low density, offering good injection molding properties, strong stability, high impact resistance, high-temperature resistance, and durability. It is also corrosion-resistant, impact-resistant, easy to color, has good processing performance, and is safe.

Disadvantages: The material has a high cost, and the manufacturing process requires high precision.

Carbon Fiber(CF)

Advantages: The material has excellent performance, with high tensile strength and durability. It is strong yet lightweight, offering resistance to high temperatures, corrosion, and radiation. It is flexible but stronger than steel, and chemically very stable.

Disadvantages: The material is expensive and requires a longer production time.

Polycarbonate(PC)

Advantages: Polycarbonate (PC) has high strength and elasticity, excellent transparency, and dyeability. It features low shrinkage during molding, good dimensional stability, fatigue resistance, weather resistance, and superior electrical properties. It is odorless, tasteless, and harmless to humans, making it the most commonly used material in the mid-to-low-end market.

Disadvantages: It has poor wear resistance, insufficient chemical stability, and is not suitable for high-temperature environments.

Material options of handmade glasses

Cellulose Acetate(CA)

Advantages: Acetate has good machinability, excellent transparency, and a beautiful appearance. It offers a pleasant feel, is easy to polish and dye, has a low density, good toughness, and is durable.

Disadvantages: Acetate has poor heat resistance, limited breathability, and wear resistance. It is relatively expensive and has an acidic odor.

Bamboo

Advantages: Bamboo is environmentally friendly and natural, lightweight and comfortable, with a unique texture and design. It is durable and has low allergenicity.

Disadvantages: Bamboo is prone to breakage, difficult to process, has limited adjustability, and offers fewer design options.

Wooden

Advantages: Wood offers a natural texture and aesthetic appeal, is lightweight and comfortable, environmentally friendly, durable, and has cultural and artistic value. It is of high quality, making it suitable for the high-end market.

Disadvantages: Wood has poor flexibility, is prone to damage, is difficult to process, requires high maintenance, offers limited styles, and is relatively expensive.

Commonly used woods include ebony, rosewood, sandalwood, pearwood, teak, and beech.

Cowhorn

Advantages: Cowhorn is a natural material with unique textures and an elegant, glossy finish. It has some antibacterial and hypoallergenic properties. It is strong and durable, making it widely used in the high-end market.

Disadvantages: Cowhorn is sensitive to moisture and high temperatures, making it prone to deformation or cracking. It is difficult to process and relatively expensive.

Material options of metal glasses

Nickel Silver

Advantages: Cost-effective, easy to process, strong, and corrosion-resistant. Its durability makes it a popular choice for mid-to-low-end eyewear.

Disadvantages: Contains nickel, which may trigger allergies, and is heavier than titanium.

To overcome these issues, nickel-free plating is now commonly used.

Stainless Steel

Advantages: Lightweight, strong, corrosion-resistant, hypoallergenic, durable, and flexible.

Disadvantages: Lower ductility, limiting complex designs, and less efficient processing.

We commonly use stainless steel sheets for ultra-thin metal temples due to their high strength and resistance to deformation.

Titanium & Titanium Alloy Frames

Advantages: Titanium is lightweight, strong, and highly resistant to corrosion. It’s hypoallergenic, durable, and comfortable for long-term wear. Titanium alloys improve flexibility and strength.

Disadvantages: The main downside is the higher cost of materials and the complex manufacturing process, which can lead to longer production times and higher prices.
